My girls were going around the merry go round. The eldest of the two, Willa, start pushing the younger one off of it. I had to stop myself from saying anything. My initial reaction was intervening.
It was a small push and it didn't seem like a big deal. So I "let it slide". They proceeded to play and push each other for another 15 seconds or so. Giggling more and more as they kept tumbling on and off of the merry go round.
As I stood there, I counldn't help but think about how often parents interrupt their children as they play. I cerntainly have more times than I care to admit.
I see it often when I am out and about. Or when I am on the playground. It happens at family gatherings. It happens, in my home.
When I then dare to think about all the times I have interrupted their play, I realize that those interruptions often cascade into more and more headbuts throughout the day. It isn't something that is necesarily linked. But my gut tells me that are certainly not helping.
I need to be better at letting them play on the fringes. Helicopter parenting and 'curling' parents are making our children fragile. I do not wish to join that cohort.
