Hey World!

So I did it. I coughed up 127 bucks, and for the first time in my life I chose to pay for an email service. Now why would anyone do this? Is Gmail not free anymore? Well, It is, and it isn't.

TL:DR - I'd rather pay with money than my soul.

I don't need to pay money to use Gmail as a service. However, over the years they slowly and surely chipped away all trust I had for them. If you hadn't noticed already, nothing in this world comes for free. Web pages are infested with cookies and analytics from Google, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. I think most of know that someone with a tinfoil hat trying to convince us to use less tech. I am that guy. You should listen to that guy.

It's about time that we all started making more deliberate choices about the technology we bring into our lives. Long gone, are the days when you trusted your local grocer, who knew you by name and depended on you for her business.

I am pretty sure that 37signals, the makers of Hey, will stay in business even without my money. But the business they run seems to resemble the old ways more so than the new 100mph businesses. They won't take your money and run.

I want to go back to the days when we had relationships with each other, and genuinely cared about people more than growth. I might just be glorifying the past, but you have to admit, when you dare to think long and hard about your habits, there are improvements to be made.

In sum, I think I will all be better off paying for a few good services, than bloating my life with superfluous apps that consume my soul and save it in the cloud.
