"All you need is two rakes and a table." This was what I told my girlfriend late afternoon today, as we were wrapping up our day in the garden. We'd been pulling out weeds, slashing through bushes and cutting various plants and things I didn't know we had.
For some reason it was amazing weather today on the island. A day that just draws you outside after a long winter. There is something magical about the first warm days in the spring, and today was no exception.
My girlfriends sister had stayed for a couple of days along with her eldest daughter. She is about the same age as Willa, so it's a great match. They left this morning and I think my family and I just needed to be us four and hang out. Just refuel together.
As we were packing up all the various garments, waterbottles and utilities from today's adventures, we looked over at our two daughters in setting sun. They were both standing on our table bench set using rakes as paddles. They were undoubtedly sailing the seven seas, dodging pirates and finding treasures.
When I see something like that I am so happy about our decision to raise 'free range kids'. I admire the creativity of children and their ability to be present in their fantasies.
I glance at my girlfriend and say:
"I think we are doing something right.. All you need is two rakes and a table".
