Shiny Object Syndrome has had me reading up on typography and digging into the work of Ellen Lupton. It started as a pursuit to create a digital garden, a place for me to develop my thoughts and writing. Simple is never enough me though, so a few days in the rabbit hole, and here I am.
It isn't a bad move to go all in things once in a while. This time around, I can take pleasure in knowing there is a lucky complimentary effect: Learning about typography and graphic design will enhance my skills as a Product Designer. Or so I believe.
The articles that I wish to present and 'tend' for in my garden must be appetizing. After reading Lupton's book "Thinking with Type", I have circled in on what I think this might be: A web article rich with meaning, easy to read, dense with information and beautiful to behold.
Blogs have become so common that any care for layout and type seems to have been thrown out of the window. I think it is time that we elevated the words and their meaning. Careful consideration and personal stylistic additives are needed.
I have already begun assembling inspiration and 'rules' that I wish to adheare to. Typography and layout make up my first task. In my opinion, they lay the foundation for any peice of writing (yes, even on the web). Once I am settled on these core pieces, I can move on to quotes, sidenotes, headings, et cetera.
The idea of the world wide web as hyperlinked network of documents is beautiful. Honoring it by adding to it, is the best I can hope to do. Can we do more than add? Can we enchance it?
