Dear Reader--
If you think cheesesteaks are simple sandwiches, you are missing so much of the story. I grew up about 90 minutes west of Philadelphia and I chose to go to college in Philly (go Drexel!). The city left a mark on me in the best way possible. It shaped my view on people, taught me how to live in new places, forced me to be comfortable in discomfort, and helped me prove to myself that I can do whatever I put my mind to. It also introduced me to a world of food.
Living in Philly for 5 years, you learn a lot about food. It's everywhere. From curbside street vendors, to Reading Terminal Market, to the multitude of fine dining, and all of our favorite pizza shops. Of all the food I tried in Philly, the cheesesteak is my favorite (no offense to the roast pork crowd). We all love the cheese covered meat piled in a fresh, warm roll, but we don't always appreciate the effort that goes into providing that food for us. Authentic, homemade food takes time, dedication, and passion. We taste it, but we don't always acknowledge it. For a select few, they become embedded parts of their communities, destinations for visitors, and legends of epic proportions. Add Angelo's to that list.
Ever hear of Franklin BBQ in Austin, TX? How about Snow's BBQ in Lexington, TX? Katz's Deli in New York? Nathan's Famous in Coney Island? These are places that people build trips around. This pizza joint in Philly is getting up there.
Angelo's Pizzeria in South Philly opened in 2013... long after I moved to Texas and shortly after I moved back to PA (that's a story for a different day). I've heard of this place... seen it listed in sub-Reddits as one of the best steaks in the city. I haven't been down there to try it myself (my family and I were partial to the Franklin at Carmen's in RTM, but they closed), but this video by Alvin Zhou makes me want to get down there ASAP and give them some more business.
Watch this... it's worth it.
