Interoperable 006: Media Consumption Part One

Photo: Cows grazing on the slopes of Horsenden Hill, a favorite local walking spot of the author who is also the person who took the photo. June 2022

Alright, we're halfway through 2022, the year where I've tried to be more intentional about my reading. I have also attempted to be more deliberate and thoughtful about other media consumption. One thing I take seriously is personal recommendations or recommendations that come from creators I already enjoy rather than mindlessly click through what the algorithms pick for me. With that in mind, here are some things I have consumed over the last ~ six months that I've enjoyed:

The One Armed Chef — YouTube, Munchies/Vice

Photojournalist Giles Duley documents the impact of conflict around the world by connecting with locals through food. Duley is endlessly thoughtful and kind towards his subjects. Food is the universal catalyst and lens through which we all can relate. Personally, the more I learn about food and people, the more I fall in love with the world. Duley's skills as a documentarian highlight the people and the food wonderfully. Finally, his own unique life story makes this series truly special.

Rumble Strip Finn and the Bell Podcast, Hub & Spoke

Peabody Winning episode of a thoughtful and heartbreaking podcast. I won't go into much detail as It would not do the story justice. (TW: Suicide)

Stewart Hicks — YouTube

Hicks is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His weekly videos are intelligent and informative. I particularly enjoy his unique insights into Chicago's architectural history. How This Midcentury Modern House Harnesses the Sun is a recent upload I enjoyed.

Beau Miles — YouTube

Beau is an outdoor educator from Australia with a unique perspective on the environment and outdoor recreation. I particularly enjoyed The Human Bean: 40 days on a tin-bean diet. Beau has made me much more appreciative of what my body is capable of and that I can find small joys right in my backyard or neighbourhood.

Laura Kampf — YouTube

Laura is a maker/designer from Germany, and her videos are as joyful as they are informative. Lately, I've been enjoying watching her latest series documenting the restoration of her house. Laura's videos have become a bit of a Sunday ritual. Watching someone solve problems and build things is always therapeutic, and I could easily watch days and days of maker YouTube videos.

Well, if I have learned anything about this exercise, it is that I still probably watch way too much YouTube and could stand to dial it back a bit. Have you, dear reader, cut back on your media consumption and care to share how it turned out? Any other questions/comments? Please shoot me a line: TYLER.DICKEY@HEY.COM.

Thanks for reading! Time for the outro thing:
