Real Digital Twins according to a process engineer

Digit twins are all the rage now. But, a lot of these, most of them actually, are focussed on the hardware. We at BPT focus on the real thing. What happens inside the guts of a process plant.

There are two broad classes:
- Steady State
- Dynamic
Just like you have models. Steady state digital twin have existed for decades, just, the people with money didn’t see the value. The reason is that the model as such doesn’t generate any revenue. But, several times a year, you need a model, an up to date one. And then everybody has to scramble to get the data to update the model to current operation. It is not a light task, it easily takes a couple of days to get the data, then some more days to update the model. And in the mean time everybody is waiting for the model results.

With a digital twin, or an online model, the up to date model is always there. And while it is waiting for the day it is needed, it provides valuable information on the behaviour of you equipment. And it really doesn’t need to shave off much of a cost or add to profit to justify itself. A fraction of a percent already results in a net profit after one month or so in operation.

Dynamic twin have their own benefits, like providing a reliable secondary sensor system. Instruments fail regularly and if the instrument is critical, the failure will stop your plant. With a secondary sensor system, you can keep running while the faulty instrument is replaced or repaired.

BPT has the tools and the skills to create these twins. You could do it yourself, but be prepared to maintain the system through personnel changes. Getting a contract with BPT removes that worry.
