Yesterday I published my first article on Linkedin and Twitter. I was happy with the outcome because it wasn't a self-referential diary entry, but at the same time it did cause some anxiety. I felt pretty vulnerable and spent a lot of time thinking about what people I know would think of my writing. In Ship 30 for 30 they say not to be afraid to put out "junk", and to learn in public, and so on. But the whole experience felt like I was putting out "click bait" and it felt inauthentic. I'd much rather spend a week on one piece of writing that isn't click-baity, and publish that on on the social blogs to promote it, rather than making a bunch of noise. My time horizon to develop this writing habit is 2-3 years, not one month.
So I have a new plan. I will spend an hour writing every day, but without the pressure to publish something every day. I'd rather write 250 words every day towards longer-form articles that go out once per week. The habit and practice are still there, but this way I'll have time to revisit a piece and fine-tune it without spending all day, but also without putting out mindless fluff.
Learning what not to do is still learning.
