Important HPD documentation

Dear Roosevelt Landings Neighbors-

Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season, and a happy, healthy New Year.

As many of you know, longstanding deficiencies in our building’s electrical wiring have now resulted in a devastating tragedy. One of our neighbors, Catherine Mahouve-Same, lost her life, and her family lost their home. This outcome could—and should—have been prevented had management responded appropriately to repeated resident complaints about sparking, fires, and electrical failures involving heaters, outlets, and air conditioners.

On the night of the fire, the fire inspector informed me that the building manager claimed resident complaints were merely due to the odor of dust burning off when heaters are first used in cold weather. L&M made the same claim to the Public Service Commission, despite residents clearly reporting sparks, smoke, and flames coming from electrical equipment. We know the difference between a harmless odor and an active fire hazard.

We now need to formally document these incidents for HPD.

If you experienced any of the following, please notify us immediately:

  • Smoldering, sparks, or flames from heaters or air conditioners

  • Melted or damaged plugs or outlets

  • Circuit breakers tripping due to normal electric use

  • Any fire or operational failure involving electrical equipment

Please reply to this email with the details of your experience and whether you reported the problem to Management or FDNY, and the outcome. And please reply to both Zach Ephron zachephron@hey.com and Joyce Short jm_short@ymail.com when responding.

Subject line format (required):

Use your own apartment number, not mine, and format it as follows:

  • 540/1604 Heater

  • 540/1604 A/C

  • 540/1604 Socket

  • 540/1604 Misc.

If you experienced issues with more than one type of device, please send separate emails for each category of device.

Using this format allows us to organize the information effectively and build a clear, documented case. We are working to have HPD conduct a full-scale investigation into the building’s electrical system, and your prompt response is critical to that effort.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Sincerely,
Joyce Short
