Priority Boarding at the tram seems such a simple ask for our residents, especially because our rent money, passed to RIOC in the form of Land Leases, pays the approximately $3 million dollar shortfall each year between the tram’s operations costs and revenue. But RIOC and the MTA have blocked this sensible solution to tourism making our commutes a nightmare.
The MTA does not give us a dime to operate the tram, in fact, if takes 50% of the gate from tram ridership. RIOC, a Public Benefit Corporation owned by the State to operate the state’s assets here in our community, claims that it must treat our tram as a public entity, not the privately held one it actually is.
Governor Hochul who oversees both the MTA and RIOC can make this nonsense stop with the stroke of her pen. We have asked her privately to fix this and nothing was solved. She needs to know that we will not silently sit by while she ignores our needs.
Please come out tomorrow, Sunday, June 8th, at 3 pm on the Manhattan Tram Plaza, to get the Island’s collective voice heard all the way up to Albany!!
