New habits are hard to create. For me, the biggest hurdle is the setup. If it takes more than a few moments to start a new habit, I’m done.
Though I workout a lot, I’m not a morning person. I love the idea of diving into my day with an early morning run, but when I get up, that’s the last thing I want to do.
However, I don’t regret it when I do it.
A few weeks back, I decided to establish a new routine and get physical at the top of the day.
So, I made a commitment to get up between 5 AM and 5:30 AM and walk for 10 minutes. After my short walk, I would do some light stretching for another 10 to 15 minutes.
On the first day, I didn’t wanna do it. As with all the days before, doing something physical after waking up was as far from interesting to me as I could imagine. But, that’s what I decided to do.
I recall sitting on the couch and debating whether or not it was important enough to start today. And it would’ve been easy to decide that tomorrow is better.
But again, it’s what I decided to do.
In my pajamas and I walked into the gym without shoes and without the proper clothing, turned on the treadmill and just started walking barefoot. I figured that the worst case scenario was that I’d not do it this way ever again. But, the best case scenario, was that it was fine and I get 10 minutes out of my morning that I’ve always wanted to have.
I’ve kept it up now for over two weeks. I walk barefoot in my pajamas right after I get up. In my pajamas, I turn on a 10 minute yoga routine on YouTube.

My lesson for today is simply to take action. I can always change my approach later. I can always decide that the action I took wasn’t enough or the most appropriate. But, I’m not going to look back on my day with regret; the regret that when I could have, I didn’t.
