A message to the fathers out there

To be a father to my daughter is the greatest gift that has been bestowed upon me

While also opening up my heart to love and challenge in ways I could have never imagined.

Being both a son, and now a father, I see the challenges my father faced.

I see how he dealt with his assignment—and how he didn’t, or couldn’t, deal with his assignment

I see what I could not see before.

Many of us will say “They did the best they could, they tried”. And for most, that is a form of bypassing the pain of neglect, the pain of abandonment, the pain of betrayal, the pain of dismissal they felt growing up.

As a son I have cried, been angry, experienced rage and yearned to be approved, loved by and validated by my father.

As I have moved through these emotions and have allowed myself to be with what has been extremely uncomfortable, I am at a place of deeper peace.

Where I truly feel I can say thank you to my father for all of it.

Being a father is my greatest honor. My commitment is to guide my daughter, see her, hear her, love her as she is, and protect her as I am meant to.

To my father—thank you for being you. To my grandfathers—although our paths briefly crossed—thank you.

Happy Father’s Day. May you be blessed with patience, awareness, willingness to change, willingness to see and feel, and to be available.

To not be torn between your passions and your family and to find YOUR way IN your way.

And to the mother’s of our children. Thank you for continuing to support our journey into fatherhood. It is not unnoticed.

The world needs healthy, available, present fathers. Now more than ever.

Love and Power,
Alex
