We sometimes mimic the vices of those we admire, rather than their virtues.
We see someone we resonate with and confuse “badness” as coolness, or worse—goodness.
This raises the question: why be virtuous at all?
We must understand that there are forces coming at us over which we have no control.
These can be political, biological, psychic, and existential, and so on
In light of these forces over which we do not control
how is one to bear the suffering coming our way without it corrupting our soul?
My invitation is to consider virtue as an antidote to the suffering of life
Virtue as a way to go over and against these forces over which we do not control.
When we explore the terrifying question of what it means to be human, we realize no one is exempt from this alternative reality.
No one.
Virtue is one way to nourish the spirit of Life inside.
It is an antidote to overcoming the worst in us.
This is significant becuase if this spirit of Life is not nourished
It will pathologize
And turn us into bitter, resentful creatures.
I have seen it happen . . .
A 60 year old brother started working with me
He works all the time, and has no family of his own.
His spare time is spent being glued to a screen to distract him from the existential dread, and meaningless in the later years of life he now faces.
Whenever he gets a chance to himself away from screens
His own soul assaults him, and others, whenever he gets a moment to be with his own thoughts.
It is not pretty.

What is one virtue you'd like to exercise in your life right now?
Pick one, and try it out.
Love and Power,
Alex
