A blog with a twist 📝

Alright, let’s do this, I’m diving directly into it. This site is my new way of sharing personal thoughts with friends, family and colleagues on things that capture my interest such as food (yes I’m a massive foodie🍴), running, tennis, productivity, technology and often geospatial and coding 👾.

But if you happen to be reading this and you don’t know me, I’m Christopher and I’m a Geographic Information Systems Consultant based in London - although the COVID-19 pandemic and WFH enabled me to spend almost half of the past year in Cyprus - my home country - a tiny Mediterranean island which I consider myself lucky to have been born in and here's why..

Why am I doing this and why world.hey.com? 📝

It's because it's really simple - let me explain. I've never had a personal blog nor a website, not because of lack of ideas (people close to me do know that I’m strongly opinionated and passionate on certain matters) but because I felt that the process of signing up was a hassle and always oriented towards attracting more people to read my blog posts - and to be honest I never liked that. It even felt a bit ‘official’ to have my own blog - i.e. I had to give it a name, choose the best and/or trending platform with the best analytics, fancy tools and a specific design that I had to choose carefully. As Jason Fried put it in his own world.hey.com post...  I, simply, just wanted to write.

You should also know that I'm ‘a bit’ privacy conscious - and by a bit I mean a lot - let me explain. Almost all blog/publishing platforms gather information from the reader - e.g. browser name, browser version, location (yikes!) and time spent on each blog post, just to address a few. These data make YOU and these data ARE easily shared with 3rd-party data brokers for targeted ads in your inbox (the usual spam) or in your social media accounts (again...spam). This is one of the main reasons I ditched Gmail for Hey!, but that story is for another post. I don't like this privacy invasion as a reader nor as a writer - and, I dare to say, the scary thing there isn't a way to opt out. I’m also not a fan of counting likes on Instagram and Facebook - so I don't get satisfaction from the number of likes and how many people read my posts/thoughts - I may be an exception but that's how things are with me - I, simply, just want to write to the world - as plain as it sounds.

Hence why I started using world.hey.com - I truly believe world.hey.com addresses my aforementioned concerns and preferences perfectly - it's privacy conscious meaning it doesn't track your visits, hence I don't know how many visitors I’ve had - yes, exactly, I don’t care... and more importantly it's super easy to publish - I mean suuuper easy 💥 I wrote and published this post just by sending an email to world@hey.com through my personal Hey! email account ...yep just like that.

...future thoughts 💭

In the mean time some more specific topics to expect in the near future include my preparation for a marathon, healthy eating during the pandemic and my thoughts on tennis' NextGen recent emergence and what that means for Nole, Rafa and the 🐐 RF. As said before I just want to share my thoughts on topics I find interesting - and if anyone gets inspired in any way I'd be even more happy!

So let's begin this journey. Thanks for reading.
