Hey :)
A week or so ago, I wrote a letter to my growing team and partners at The Question First Group. It was about the kind of company I want to build — one where the business genuinely supports the lives of the people in it.
Several people reached out asking for help with their goals, and the weekly reports started coming in that same day. A week on, they’re still coming.
I thought it was worth sharing here.

Hey Team :)
I want to share something with you about the kind of company I want us to build together.
I want to work in a company where the business genuinely supports the lifestyle of the people who work in it. This shouldn’t feel like just a job. In many ways, I want this business to feel like a gift to the people who are part of it. A place where you can do your best work, build a life you’re proud of, and feel supported in the things that matter to you outside of work as well.
If it doesn’t feel like that for someone, then maybe this isn’t the right place for them. And that’s okay. But my ambition is to create a company where it truly does feel like that.
Another thing that matters a lot to me is the kind of people I’m surrounded by. I want to work alongside people who are inspiring and fascinating (like you). And in my experience, the most inspiring people are the ones with big ideas, big dreams, and a sense of what they want to achieve in their life.
Something I’ve noticed over the years is that people who are fascinating are doing fascinating work — work that genuinely interests them.
That’s why it’s so important that we all understand what our unique ability is and the kind of work we should be doing. The work that energises us. The work that challenges us. The work that makes us want to get better.
A big part of that comes down to having goals.
Personal goals and professional goals.
If we really want to build a business that supports our lifestyles, those two things need to come together somehow. Your personal goals support your work goals. Your work goals influence your personal life. It’s all connected. We’re one person, not two separate lives, and the more aligned those things are, the better everything tends to work.
So one of the reasons I’m writing this is to encourage you to take your goals seriously.
Every week. Every month.
Take time to review them and ask yourself a few honest questions:
- Is the work I’m doing here helping me move towards the life I want?
- Is the way I’m living my life helping me sustain the level of performance I want in my work?
- Am I doing more of the work that fascinates me and less of the work that drains me?
- Am I gradually moving towards more valuable, more meaningful work?
- Are my goals becoming clearer?
- Is my vision for my work and life getting bigger?
These are important questions.
Because the clearer you are about what you want, the better work you’ll do here. And when people are doing their best work, everyone benefits.
To support this, you’re going to see something new from me.
Each week I’m going to ask everyone to send a short report. I call it a 3–1–3. I’ve used this for years and Julia does hers as well.
It’s very simple:
3 - Three biggest wins from the past week
1 - One main objective for the week ahead
3 - Three key tasks that will move the needle next week
That’s it.
The thing people often get stuck on is trying to make it perfect. It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be done. Over time it gets better. Your thinking gets clearer. Your goals sharpen. Your work improves.
I personally want to be surrounded by people who have goals.
People who are striving to improve themselves and their work. People who are aiming higher this year than they did last year. People who are thinking about what they want their life to look like and doing something about it.
That’s the kind of company I want to build.
As an owner, I feel it’s my responsibility to encourage that.
And I genuinely want to know your goals. I want to know what you want from your work. I want to understand how this business can support the lifestyle you’re trying to build. I want to know your aspirations and your vision.
So I’m going to open a thread where we can start sharing and working through some of this together.
If you want help with goal setting, planning, or thinking bigger about what you want, I’m more than happy to help. I’ve spent a lot of time working on this myself, and I have my own coach that has helped me specifically with goal setting for years. I’ve picked up some powerful tools along the way.
But we’ll start simple.
The first step is just this: take some time to think about your personal and professional goals. Write them down. Send them to me. I’m happy to help you shape them if you want.
Then commit to the weekly check-in with the 3–1–3 report.
That’s where we’ll start.
My intention with all of this is simple: I believe this will be good for everyone. As the company grows, the clearer you are about why you’re here and what you want from your work and your life, the better work you’ll do.
And when people are doing their best work, everyone wins.
