The concept of emergence is very powerful. It says that emergence is a property that is not designed or built-in, they are output not an input of a system.
A system that allows fostering of the natural interaction and behaviour within a simple first principle constraint.
Author gives an example of the phenomena of beautiful pattern formed by flocking birds. If one had to write a program to simulate that behaviour, one of the first principle constraint for that would be “do not run into each other”. It allows the birds to enjoy the interaction and self-adjust when that principle is not being followed.
Recently at my driving class, When you drive, trying to remember each complex rule, it does not let the flow of emergent behaviour happen. On the other hand, you can be in the flow of your driving if you let the natural interaction and behaviour happen with a simple first principle constraint. The instructor explained a fundamental guiding principle about having a communication with the other people whom you share the road with. Now, this principle will give room for emergent behaviour to happen.
The flow of emergence tells us not to tighten the system variables in a way that its users loose the natural interaction and behaviour.
