Review: Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie (2025) - ★★★★½

Geez, a little true north pride seeing Toronto playing itself as only it could (as seen in such films as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Pixar’s Turning Red). Iconic scenery provided by the “SkyDome,” the CN Tower, the Rivoli (an inexplicable troupe carried over from the previous NTBTS series), and random extras walking by all help ground this magical farce in a way that might even reward ignorance of its origins and lore. The less you know going into this, the better, as a parade of sexual predators, a knowledgeable libertarian Canadian Tire employee, and snippets of cultural homophobia are all stacked up into this madcap tale of friendship and loyalty. This felt electric and original (clichéd flashbacks used to playfully challenge your experience and remembrance) even though it was blatantly ripped from a well-worn VHS of Back to the Future that may have been taped over with the best of Just for Laughs Gags. So far, one of the most exciting things to come out of Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry money. Fun fact: it was only the second movie I’ve seen this year to use the Black Eyed Peas as a punchline.
