Thwarting a Hacking Attempt on my Best Buy account

It’s 4:50pm yesterday, and just as I am about to leave - I get an email notification that my Best Buy login was approved. I’m like: “I didn’t login to Best Buy, the hell?!”

That was a red alert to myself that some jerk just got into my Best Buy account. Low and behold, I go over to my Best Buy app, and someone just added a 65 inch TV to my cart, ready to buy.

Couple of thoughts race into my mind:
(to channel MacEvoy: how do I open a can of whoops on this hacker jerk!?)

- How do I thwart this hacking attempt? Remove the 65 inch TV immediately from the cart
- Change my password in Best Buy
- Turn on 2FA (2-factor authentication, aka send me a 6-digit number to my phone and then I enter that in)
- THEN, log out of my Best Buy (to kick the hacker out of my Best Buy account). Note: don’t log out of the Best Buy account before changing your own password and turning on 2FA because the hacker might change your username and password and log YOU out of your account)

Another note: I used a weak ass password on my Best Buy account, which is why it was easily hacked

- The key to this was using my Password Manager to generate a new (secure) password and replace it immediately (as well as give me my old password that you need, before you enter a new password).

- And I know, in a situation like this, you’re like, “how do I go on the offense and find this jerk and shut them down!” DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. Protect yourself (first and foremost), before you wreck yourself.

Questions about password managers or 2FA, let me know!
