Artists and critics

Football matches have twenty two people on the pitch and maybe fifty thousand people in the stands. This kind of ratio holds for artists and critics.

Hardly anyone creates, hardly anyone makes great work and puts it out there but thousands watch and thousands criticise.

And what’s worse is that just the existence of critics is what means some of those would-be artists or writers or creative people don’t even get started. They are scared of the spotlight, of being on the field, on the hook, open to interpretation and available for commentary.

There comes a point where we have to choose which we want.

Are we happy to be a spectator and a critic or actually do we have more to offer? Do we want to be one of those in the arena who are taking all the flack but also all the glory?

One of the few or one of the many? Artist or critic? You decide.
