Reading from the great Marcus Aurelius’ book- Meditatons, there is an excerpt “Neither player-king nor prostitute”
The way I see this to be interpreted is a call for integrity and balance in one’s role and responsibilities, especially in leadership or personal conduct.

• “Player-king” refers to someone who merely plays the role of a ruler—someone who seeks power, prestige, or the appearance of authority without genuinely fulfilling the responsibilities that come with it. It suggests vanity, pretense, or self-indulgence in leadership.
• “Prostitute” metaphorically represents someone who sells themselves out, compromises their values, or seeks external validation at any cost—whether for money, approval, or fleeting rewards.
In essence, Marcus Aurelius is advocating for authenticity and virtue:
• Do not seek power for its own sake or play a role to impress others.
• Do not compromise your integrity or principles for external rewards.
• Instead, lead with wisdom, serve with purpose, and remain true to your higher values.
It aligns with his Stoic philosophy, which emphasizes self-discipline, duty, and inner virtue over external appearances or fleeting pleasures.
I think we can view the field of fake gurus and would be influencers that self label as “leaders” and see how this character flaw has been around for generations.
I recently watched and wrote about Chris aka Oliver Anthony speaking at a leadership conference and calling himself a “NOBODY”.
I find the power in being able to claim being a Nobody about the strongest thing I’ve heard in a decade.
I’m moved to find a humble confidence in trusting that we are all enough.
