The truth about meetings

A call between two people isn't a meeting. It's a talk between two people.

A meeting with 5 people for 1 hour is the equivalent of 5 hours. It's 5 productive and expensive hours.

If the average person on the call makes $40 an hour, that was a $200 call at cost.
It's hopeful that the subject leads to an action that creates an ROI. I believe an 8x-10x ROI makes sense.

So ask yourself if a $200 meeting lead to an idea or set of actions that you can measure to have made you $2000.

Interesting thought, right?

Now let's move away from direct cost and earning potential. If you are doing things right, a person that makes $40 an hour earns you $350 per hour. They are a human resource. You don't want to break even do you?

So now you have 5 people at $350 per hour for 5 hours. That meeting kept you from making $1750.

If it's more people, it only goes up.

You might tell yourself your staff makes $22 per hour. That's what their rate of pay is, but loaded with insurance, WC, FICA, training, lost time, vacation.....it might surprise you that they are over $30 by a ways.

So be intentional in your meetings. I love tech meetings, but it's likely more money could be saved by training ON THE JOBSITE, when you are making money while they are billable (If you use T&M especially).

But 12 people sitting for an hour while one person reviews what everyone has heard 33 times and whining and bitching is allowed, is like throwing the money away.

You might as well donate to your favorite charity. At least it's tax deductible.

I'm not saying meetings don't have benefits of announcements and culture, but thinking in term of business, there might be alternatives. The very people sitting in meetings might rather see those funds re-allocate to their compensation so they can live a little easier with less stress.

That's a good ROI.

Cheers,
Klark
