I’ve been doing a deep dive this week on the idea around key characteristics.
These are more about “what kind of people will make my organization or business magical?”
The character markers that not only make customers want to camp out with you but make other good people come work there and help you make the campers happy.
These are under core values. They are not the same.
So you need to sit and make a wish list of if I could hire the best people, they would be {these things}.
It might be simpler to start with what you DON’T want.
Pete Caroll was the head coach for USC and then on to be the coach for the Seattle Seahawks.
Known to be a great leader, he was interviewed once and asked this:
Interviewer:
We all hire people that don’t end up being as great as they made out. What do you do with THOSE people?
Pete: I throw them a rope. I don’t give up on them. We try to see if it’s a wrong seat or something else.
Interviewer:
What do you of the second time.
Pete:
Again, I throw them a rope.
Interviewer:
Ok. Now comes a third time. What do you do then?
Pete:
I let them drown.
They clearly don’t want my ropes and I can’t make them take it.
This is a great story and helps us ask ourselves if we are bringing people in and expecting them to just fit in to our tribe?
Sometimes it takes a little time.
I like to say we all have “walls”. Some are just taller and thicker.
Hey. I’d love to make sure you know we have some spots left at our Montana Business Retreat this summer.
My team and I have a memorable time and experience planned. We’d love to help you with Ninja Delegation Skills
