I launched my company as a consultant. A consultant is most often hired for a DFY project. Done for you.
I launched and worked mostly with one company on an implementation.
I was in Alexandria Va filling a role as a Director of OPs for a large service organization.
Company-wide there were over 700 technicians.
This company invested heavily into professional and personal growth.
On one occasion, they brought in a known speaker and educator servicing their industries name Kenny Chapman.
With that many employees, they had to stagger bringing teams in to sit through Kenny’s one day workshop.
So over 5 days, groups were brought across 9 locations and 3 states.
I say this to share a realization that was lost on everyone until Kenny brought it up.
He was in his energetic role and told everyone that he was being paid handsomely to fly from Az to Va/ DC to spend a week.
The company laid his fee, his travel, hotel and meals.
But what no one accounted for was the cost of having 700 technicians not producing over that week.
Rough numbers, each tech was assigned to generate 800-1000 per day.
So 700 people at 1000 a day. You can math that out. That’s the real cost. The investment in these individuals was staggering.
But not investing in their teams growth and development would likely cost 10x that.
I was inspired by Kenny’s presentation and then with him as we shared a water during the break.
I begin to dig in that day and evolve to be an educator and not a hired doer.
Best decision I’ve ever made.
Still close friends with Kenny today. Not sure I can repay him and I’m sure he wouldn’t expect me to. Other than do my best.
