Since early 2022, I've been diving into the impact that extended hours of screen usage can have on everyday folks like me. And possibly you, too.
It all started when I felt myself struggling and frustrated. I have a job in an office spent largely in front of screens; I’m a parent with young kids organising activities, play dates, school events; I have a husband, friends, parents, extended family, neighbours and a bunch of other people and groups to stay connected with.
On one hand, the constant pings and notifications affirmed I had a full and busy life. Yet on the other hand, I was feeling increasingly exhausted, distracted, anxious and weirdly disconnected from the most important people and groups in my life.
So began my research and experimentation. I read, watched, listened, did a digital detox, used screen timers, tried to become mindful … the list goes on. I’ve been asking lots of questions and having conversations with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours about how they feel about their use of screens - where does it benefit them, and at what point does the upside of technology give way to frustration, fatigue and overwhelm?
Turns out, many people I’ve spoken with feel the same. Interestingly, some people believe they have enough autonomy in their lives to change their screen usage, whilst others feel stuck and dispirited.
I’m testing the potential for a project that responds to this digital unease and want to expand the conversation beyond my immediate bubble. If anything I’ve written resonates with you, I’d love to know more. Do you think about your screen time? Wonder how it affects your mood, brain and body? Are you exploring boundaries?
Please complete this quick, 5-minute survey to help me build my understanding and insight. Your response is confidential and will contribute to me further developing this project.
