Notes on my recent trip to Mexico

My lovely wife Kate and I went to Mexico for 3 weeks in October 2025. Here is my report.

Overall, we had a lovely time. I met a large number of Americans, Mexicans and others over the three weeks; in that way it was an extrovert's dream! I never felt at all threatened physically the entire time. And Cabo St Lucas, though it seems to be quite a large metro area, has a "small town" feel around the large resort where we stayed; the trolley runs about 10 or more hours every day .... the food was generally excellent, the flights were mostly pretty crowded (except the last one home to Seattle from Phoenix.) Overall: a lovely time.

But: one warning to travelers ...this next section is a bit unpleasant/NSFW so you may want to stop reading if this sort of content is a bother for you and you may want to protect your children from this next part.

Fortunately, nothing nearly fatal, just a major annoyance that came up for me in the Phoenix Airport on the way home. Apparently there was some Aspartame that somehow got into one or more of the desserts I had that week, and without going into too much detail, this stuff has emphatically negative gastrointestinal effects on me, and it took me about 1.5 hours to get myself cleaned up and ready to go home.

So recommendations to travelers: (1) Make sure you know what's in any food you have an allergy to. I hadn't had any such problem the whole week and let my guard down. But eternal vigilance is apparently required ... especially if you have some life-threatening condition like a peanut allergy.

Safe travels, everyone!
