The value of bidets
This post is NSFW ... deals with human excretory functions ... so if you have sensitive individuals reading over your shoulder, best to warn them off and also rid the room of any small children. I just looked on Amazon for the price of toilet paper: $5.99 for 100 sheets. I may have spent as much or more time in the "loo" than most any ...

My experience with AI recruiters
I have had two different AI recruiter experiences the last two days. I got two different emails saying "start your AI interview" and I got this AI who called himself Thomas for both times. I've been looking for jobs on the computer for at least 25 years and I've had various experience with recruiters I once had a young female recruiter...

Brian Taylor Cohen and the new Food Guidelines
I very much enjoy Brian Taylor Cohen on YouTube, but I watched a video of his earlier this week where he was giving outdated info on the proper human diet. Check Nina Teicholz on YouTube ... she is the Real Deal of a Science Journalist.

The Big Fat Surprise
I have been watching YouTube lately one of my favorites being Bryan Taylor Cohen. But last night I watched a video of his quoting RFK jr. on the acceptable human diet. He's wrong, I think ... There was a book published 2015 The Big Fat Surprise with several surprising conclusions: (1) Saturated fat is good for you! (2) Masai warriors i...

Utopia for Realists
Utopia for Realists By Rutger Bregman This is a serious work by a serious scholar (the back of the book is full of footnotes). He recommends two shocking (to me) recommendations for the US: (1) completely open borders (2) universal basic income I am completely in favor of (1): let me know when this is available and I will certainly sig...

Utopia for Realists
This is the best nonfiction book I have read in years. It is one of those "everything you thought you knew was wrong" books: (1) just giving money directly to everyone in the US is cheaper than the current bunch of insurance and welfare agencies who have all sorts of enforcement mechanisms to keep the poor people from gaming the system...

A book I just read that should be widely appreciated.
The book is Utopia for Realists and it points out that we can have a relative "utopia" (he's not kidding about this and I am not either. He makes two excellent points: (1) Instead of continuing to pay the monkeypuzzle list of welfare agencies and enforcement authorities, just give poor people the money directly, to solve homelessness a...

Glassdoor this evening
I just spent about 15 minutes trying to get Glassdoor to show me the employee photos for Gartner group and it never responded. Glassdoor had been one of my go-to job sites recently, but I guess I will have stick with Ziprecruiter and a bit of Indeed. That's all for now; I have to get back to my email!

tired of the "gerrymander war?"
So am I! But there is a (relatively) simple solution: Ranked Choice Voting ... it eliminates all the incentives that abound in the current system for gerrymandering, "strategic voting", running knowingly weaker candidates in one race to save more party resources for another race or races. Ranked choice voting eliminates 95% or more of ...

RIver of Jobs
I am starting my River of Jobs Project today ... I have Vagrant running on my Windows 11 box, which gives one the power of Linux, Emacs and LaTeX all running inside a (lowly) Windows machine. River of Jobs is a new system (tentative title) to take a serious bite out of the three major job hunting sites on the Internet: ICIMS, Workday, ...

Notes on my recent trip to Mexico
My lovely wife Kate and I went to Mexico for 3 weeks in October 2025. Here is my report. Overall, we had a lovely time. I met a large number of Americans, Mexicans and others over the three weeks; in that way it was an extrovert's dream! I never felt at all threatened physically the entire time. And Cabo St Lucas, though it seems to be...

My recent trip to Mexico
My lovely wife and I traveled recently to Mexico to Cabo St. Lucas, where there is a resort called Villa Palmas (or similar) we had a generally lovely time, with a couple of distinct exceptions. Both involve my allergies; one is to dust mites and one is to Aspartame, which somehow was placed into the dessert (we speculate) on our last ...

Home Depot's wholly inadequate computer systems and/or training of employees
My wife and I ordered an air filter from one of the Lewis County WA Home Depot stores last week. I just spent maybe 20 minutes with two or three of their stores trying to get the answer from them; no good. I would recommend that Home Depot invest in better computer tech and/or better employee training. Thanks much, Mark McWiggins

River of Jobs Launch message
I finally got the message last night on how to do my River of Jobs system. I spent several weeks messing with ChatGpt, Google Gemini, Perplexity and Meta AI; all failed to the extent that I thought I was working with a C- high school student. So last night i was looking at mojo, the superfast variant of Python. But I was trying to use ...
