Life is a Gift

November 13, 2024

Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.

— Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to Jean-Baptiste Le Roy, 1789

Last night I found out that a friend passed away on Saturday. I’ve been struggling processing the news, and have been thinking about what I want to share with you about it.

Kelly was 52 years old. She was married to Boaz for 22 years and together had four children. She was diagnosed with breast cancer May of 2022 and fought hard for 2 1/2 years to beat it. She was a wonderful person and did not deserve this.

In church lately there’s been a conversation about tragedy and making sense of God’s plan. I’ve come to understand is we won’t be privy to God’s plan until we move beyond this world and we’re with Him.

What I do know is the people who knew and loved Kelly are sad this week. Her family is is hurting and grieving. Her friends do not know what to do or say to provide comfort, so we do the only thing we can. We show up. We listen. We care. We rejoice in the life she lived and the gift it was to know her.

Life is a gift. We don’t know how long we have, and no matter what it will always be too short. Do not wait for life to happen. Create the life you want to live. Attack each day as if it was your last.

By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.

— Genesis 3:19
