The evidence that we are a serious people or worthy of the tag of ‘civilised’ diminishes dramatically with every passing day.
Having visited Lakshwadeep, I know what Pragya says in this piece is true:

There is no evidence that we deserve any of the land, freedoms or privileges we get to enjoy.
We have in Bharatpur, Sitapur, Jolly Buoy, Minicoy, Thinakarra, Ross and Smith, some of the best beaches in the world. White sands, clear waters, coral, seclusion. We have it all to kick Bali, Phuket, Maldives etc.
But we have defiled those spaces with plastic, poorly planned unaesthetic infrastructure, random resorts, horrible toilets and lots of garbage. No public infrastructure to speak off. Let alone any semblance of a plan to manage the large piles of waste accumulating with the few tourists that visit.
And let’s not get started with trying to get permits to visit smaller islands, snorkel nearby or visit places like Barren Island.
The opaque broker/tout system and culture of cordoning off spaces for VIP’s makes it impossible to actually travel.
The people are not hospitable, don’t know how to host and most definitely have no taste. There are good apples but it won’t cut it.
We don’t seem to know how to build and manage our country to make people want to visit it and enjoy the sights, sounds and nature. Painting with too broad a brush? The tourism coffers seem to suggest i am right.
