At the age of 38, in my lifetime there have been 10 American elections with 6 presidents , 8 Indian elections with 10 prime ministers , 8 politburo standing committees in China headed by 4 different presidents, Russia has had 3 leaders. There are 12 different armed conflicts underway.
All those economies have grown. Institutions have continued chugging away and grown. Policies have vacillated like pendulums. Corporations continue to find ways to sell more stuff to different countries. Every one of those leaders, regardless of affiliations, have pushed their agendas, waged wars while spewing sweet nothings about history, people, tradition, culture and democracy. And we lap this stuff up and get worked up like needy puppies.
Growth may not be a given. But there are a whacky number of people in power who are incentivised to keep things chugging along in some shape or form regardless of whose name is on the prime ministers or presidents cabin.
Getting worked up about this stuff is absurd. There are things you actually control in your life that deserve more attention and time. Your health, your perspective on things that actually improved your life: electricity, fertilisers, where you live, healthcare, your daily habits and your child’s education.
I am not saying ignore the news. But to give it outsized importance is pointless. Treat leaders and news like numbers and stories that they are. And just be grateful that you or your community are not in the news for the wrong reasons.
