Marketing

The best marketing unironically seems to be to shit on traditional marketing. And who better to roast marketing or subvert it than a standup comedian.

I am allergic to marketing. But even I know that stuff does influence me to buy things or want to buy something. Or think of something as having more thought or effort going into the making of it.

When I think Toyota, I think of the Top Gear episode of trying to destroy a Hilux. I was in college and always dreamt of driving a Hilux since.

Watching a documentary about how the Toyota Landcruiser was built and it was the first vehicle to make it up to a certain point in Fuji always left me with this notion that Toyota’s don’t give up on you.

And some of my favourite brands do the most odd forms of marketing. Goruck and Casio come to mind. They do events, they do product walkthroughs. Here’s one video where Casio talk about how they agonise over polishing the components in their MR-G series.

The Japanese do these really detailed product walkthroughs and breakdowns that I dig! I also enjoyed the How its made series that used to be on discovery but you can find on many YouTube channels. Here’s a terrific video with cheesy music on how the Sori Yanagi kettle is made:

Sori Yanagi is an amazing Japanese designer who makes my favourite bowl and plate :D

The word authentic gets thrown around a lot these days. And I’ve always thought what can be more authentic than just talking about how or why you made something or do your job?
