The things a gym or coaching service need to excel at doing.

When I critically look at our gym and online coaching service, I try to understand how we are faring against a few qualitative yardsticks:

How long can we keep a good streak of training going by factoring for ups and downs of life?

When a client does need a break, how quickly can we help them bounce back? Can training and eating well remain on top of their mind without feeling like undue stressors.

How can we accommodate the client who needs a lot of hand holding or loves to be independent in the same hour? And of course everyone in between.

How can our space and programming factor for people who span across the quality of movement spectrum? They may have a hard time learning to move or may pick up things with minimum effort. Everyone should be able to fit in.

How can we accommodate different capacities and skill levels of strength?

How do we balance the thin line between strength and conditioning. Both in terms of volume and time spent on each.

How do we teach new skills while not letting existing skills or capacity suffer?

How do we make sure lifting does not turn into a counterproductive sport. And if a client does want to turn it into a sport, how can we get them to recognise the risk-reward shift. And how can we get them to chase diverse outcomes and adaptations without fixating on one of two adaptations that they enjoy.

How do we get clients to have a realistic sense and patience it takes to achieve certain adaptations and outcomes. Or even recovery from injuries or managing chronic issues. Timelines of weeks or months are more realistic than days. And we need to communicate this reality without demotivating or demoralising the client.

How can we make this all fun without being robots about it. Or getting so carried away with adaptation or outcomes, that we suck the joy out of lifting and training.
