Graduation speech I wish I had given in 2019

It is mentioned "I wish" not because I did not take a step to do so but because there never existed any chance in the first place. My college celebrated two occasions as part of the 'Bye Bye' stages of college life.
  1. Achiever's Day - Students who got placed in companies participate as occasion.
  2. Convocation Day - Students sit down for group photos in graduation ceremony attire.
Well, both of them didn't really have some space for students of the exit batch to come up and speak up.

But either way, completing a 4 year journey had given me learnings that I wish to share who aspire to start similar journey.

I chose computer science because I am fascinated by computers and what makes them tick. It has something wonderful at every step of it. So if you want to spend your next 192 weeks (~ 4 years) to graduate, you will need to love the journey. Without loving it, the journey is going to be stressful.

Participate in different things in different ways. In a University atmosphere, you'd see a lot of things happening outside the classroom. Figure out ways to become part of them. They might not be interesting to you, but it's worth participating to getting to know the taste. The path is not going to be obvious. You will have to figure it out.

Professors or Management may not always be wrong. Likewise, your thought process about them might not always be right. There are always instances that will irritate you, feel undervalued, not given enough importance, and feel used for some work. They will not mean anything to you at the current time, but trust me, they will arm you to face real life. That doesn't mean you should bear them. It only means be aware and act on them without getting carried on by emotions.

Put effort into building the greatest group of friends you will ever have. They are certainly not those who are just classmates or get in touch by chance. They are those people who are honest and prefer you to do what's right over keeping your secrets. They will become part of your long journey. Find them. 75% of whom you will find are going to bad decisions. But the remaining 25% are going to be with you only if you try finding it in the first place.

Competition is overrated. Yet, I am not talking just about Exams.

Seniors can bring so many valuable experiences. Don't just benefit from what they can do for you, but completely spend time with them to learn their perspectives.

Talk to fellow students you're interested in directly. Please don't stare at their profiles on social media, or don't simply DM and wait for their messages. If you DM, make sure you try to meet after the small talk. You might seem awkward. But you will learn interpersonal skills that you will keep for life, although most of them you tried to talk about will be temporary.

Focus on reaching 60% of the marks than usual 100%. That will keep you happy with the marks you've got and gives you enough bandwidth to focus on a side project or co-curricular activity.

See college placements as a beginning. Not the end of life. This lens of seeing will give you hope and put effort. Never correlate your or one's talent with the $$ salary that the company pays. Salary only says how much a business can afford to hire you, not the value of you.

Display in every opportunity that you could interact with your parents that you've been more compassionate, helpful, and decisive than you were in the past. Earn the confidence so that whatever the future turns out to be, you will have someone who understands the tough times. It is way better than their support just because you are their child.

Don't chase success. It's always relative to one's validation. Every validation will have someone who is always better, smarter, and greater than you. That doesn't mean you will have to participate and win the race. Find peace and always only look for a better version of yourself.

Freedom to Eat what you enjoy.
Freedom to buy the things you need (not want).
Freedom to be able to make memories.

All of the above will give you fulfillment into those 192 weeks, then any success painted by college, parents, or motivational posts on social media.
