Can you read?

Developers can read and understand code. They can extract meaning and flow by reading code. However, reading and understanding a long writing is limited. In software development, there is business analysis and other roles to support them. They break requirements down into smaller chunks that developers can comprehend.

The process works. Many developers lost the ability to comprehend long writings, especially for non-native English speakers. We are not good at what we do not train.

Word is not a perfect medium for communication. It is a good and widely used tools. It does the job well with required effort from both sides. Both sides must train that skill.

AI comes to life. People start using AI to "comprehend" for them. Prompts like "Summarize this article for me." "Tell me what I must do from this requirement." And soon enough, we even do not care to read the original one. As a result, the reading skill is worse.

When that skill is shrinking, are we sure we comprehend what AI has summarized? AI generates lots of words. I wish you the best.

AI generates lots of words, lots of code. If we do not care about the outcome, never mind. What if we do care?

Train reading skill. Train comprehensive reading. The ability to read a book, ability to read a long material. Comprehend them. Use AI at your wish and watch out for the side effect. Keep them in checked.

When one hesitates to read a book or a long material, it is a good sign their reading skill is at risk.
