宣長は、歴史の根底には文学があると考えたのです。歴史の根底には、自然科学者が考えている事実などありはしないのです。事実は自然にしかありません。歴史は人間の心なのです。科学者は、人の心を心理上の事実と言い、これを研究するのが心理学だと言いますが、宣長が歴史の扱うものは人間の心、情だとするのは、歴史は心理学で研究できるという意味ではない。
心理学は、人間の心を自然の事実なみに考え、これを心理上の事実と考えますが、人間の生きている心を、死んだ自然的事実と同じに考える事は出来ないのです。生きた情は、文学的、具体的な言葉によって全的に表現できるが、抽象的言語によって説明しても、その一部が理解できるに過ぎないのです。

Fact only lies in "nature". History is the reflection of human hearts, emotions. Scientists say human emotions are the psychological facts, and the psychology is the discipline to study it. Norinaga scopes the subject of history to be human's emotion, "情", that's entirely different meaning than that of psychology.
Psychology treats human emotions as if it's a fact in nature. But it's not possible to treat our ever-changing emotions to be in the same line with the "dead facts" of natural occurring. Alive emotions can be described as a whole by the literature, specific expressions by words. If you try to capture that essence by scientific abstractions, you'd only grasp the parts of it.
