Synchronous daily standup meetings are a waste of time.
You end up waiting for the PM or your co-workers to start the meeting. The daily standup meeting can go on and on and on if there is a discussion among people. If you're working with developers in different time-zones, it's hard to sync a good time to meet. You are interrupting developers from their deep-work state to attend the meeting. Before the meeting, developers have to prepare what to say. Keeping quiet or just saying "Nothing to add. All good" is ideal but because everyone else is saying something you are also expected to say some words. It can go on for more than 30+ minutes easily if you have a medium sized team. PM's usually dont have a good daily standup template to follow.
On the other hand asynchronous daily standups are super useful.
Developers can reply anytime in the day. They are not interrupted from their deep flow state. They dont have to attend meetings. Because they are asynchronous, you can read up on all the replies at your own time. There is no micromanagement. There is no pressure to say something in person.
